Chiropractic for Neck Pain

Neck pain is increasingly common, and its no mystery why. Long hours looking at screens, desks that weren’t designed with our bodies in mind, and the low-level tension that commons with a busy family or working life all take a toll on the cervical spine. At Langwarrin Family Chiropractic, we see a wide range of neck pain presentations, from the sudden ‘woke up and can’t turn my head’ variety, to the slow build of tension that’s been there for years.

Neck pain rarely has a single source. Joint restriction in the cervical spine, muscle tension, disc irritation, poor sleep or working posture, and referred patterns from the upper back can all play a role. Because the neck is closely connected to the upper back, shoulders, jaw and nervous system, we assess the full picture rather than just the area that hurts.

What we commonly see:

  • Neck stiffness and restricted movement, especially on one side.

  • Chronic neck tension and muscle tightness that doesn’t fully resolve

  • Screen and desk-related neck pain (tech neck)

  • Waking with a stiff neck or locked neck (acute torticollis)

  • Referred pain into the shoulders, upper back or arms

  • Neck pain following a car accident or whiplash

  • Neck pain associated with headaches

  • Cervical adjustments, when performed by a qualified chiropractor following proper assessment, is considered safe for the vast majority of people. We discuss technique options with you before proceeding and always adapt our approach to your preference and comfort.

  • Recurring neck pain is often a sign to an underlying pattern, whether postural, work related or structural - that hasn’t been fully addressed. Our assessments focus on identifying these contributing factors so care can be directed at the cause, not just symptoms.

  • Yes, headaches that originate from the upper neck (known as cervicogenic headaches) are commonly mistaken for tension headaches or migraines. If your headaches coincide with neck stiffness or start at the base of your skull, this is something worth mentioning at your appointments so we can assess it properly.
